Daily exercise being the new norm
My shoes were giving way
I popped into the closest sports store
And checked out their huge display

The bright lights they blinded me
Focusing on each new pair
And friendly, young assistants hovering
To help with choosing from the gear

Nylon, hi-tech foam and rubber
The three stripes and the swoosh
And shoes with the wings of speed
That supposedly make you go whoosh

Leaping felines and initials & designer alphabets
Sneakers and keds catering to the fashion dynamic
Padded cushioning, retro styling and canvas classics
Global brands, limited editions, designs iconic

“Boost”, “glide”, “hyper”, “energy” features
Laces, high tops, velcro, pump, traction soles
Filled with gel and (hot) air bubbles
To meet their marketing goals

While the rich kids pay top dollar
Hanging out in a mall, or playing ball in a street
A poor guy in an Asian sweat shop
Slogs away without shoes on his feet

All worked up yet again
I then decided to Just Do It
I jogged out of the store
Swearing I could run in bare feet

  2. I am not fond of shopping for athletic shoes because I am like goldilocks looking for the “just right” pair. That being said, your poem reminds me that there are so my kids and adults without shoes and I should be grateful for what I have. Thanks for that.
