Night of the Third Eye

Tonight
On the most glorious of nightsI look up at the indigo expanse
And in your visible sliver of crescent
I realise that is my minute arc of the known
In the infinite circle of all there is to learn

And the unseen beyond
Is the darkness I have to overcome
For which my third eye I must open

Note: Today is Mahashivratri, a day dedicated to the worship of Shiva – one of the Hindu pantheon. I’ve used the crescent moon which is supposed to rest on His head, as a metaphor for my very limited scope of knowledge, as opposed to the full moon and its completeness. The third eye is the mythical one just on the forehead just above the bridge of the nose, which is supposed to open to let knowledge in.Ā
