Under the Bodhi Tree

Prophets, incarnations and apostles
many were they who roamed the earth
Speaking in different tongues
their message everywhere the same

Then was a prince from Nepal
born to vast riches
Sensitive to experiences
in a time of great bloodshed

Choosing a life more ordinary
renouncing worldly pleasure
seeking instead wisdom under a tree
eyes closed, the Eye opening

With the knowledge acquired
Siddhartha became Gautama the Buddha
A prince, the Lord
A halo taking the place of his crown

The sword thus replaced by Dharma
violence by righteousness & virtue
cruelty by compassion & kindness
His 8 fold path shining
the way forward for a wayward world

  1. Awesome piece except for the politically correct first stanza. Speaking in different tongues their message was not the same, perhaps similar, but not the same. Sorry I am being that guy 😛

    1. Nice catch, Sachin! I agree that the messages in some cases are different, but it wasn’t political correctness, as much as a perhaps somewhat naive belief that they’re all preaching the same goal of universal peace & brotherhood. Thanks!!!!
